Kerwyn Hawkins & Elena Moreno-Barbero are an international couple who combine American education and Spanish culture to create an successful business and family life in Spain.

Today, we are with Kerwyn Hawkins and Elena Moreno-Barbero. Kerwyn and Elena were some of the first friends I met when I moved to Denver almost 9 years ago, yet they moved back to Almeria (Elena’s hometown) to raise their newborn twins in the Spanish culture within a few months of my arrival.  I was sad to see them go, but almost a decade later and Im here in their country, sharing a first-hand experience in the culture of Adalucia.  Kerwyn and Elena founded and run Anglophone English Academy, which is now in 2 large locations in Almeria, Spain and teaches hundreds of students.  They also actively employ travelers and locals alike to create a rich and diverse faculty.  They did all of this while moving across the world and raising their 3 children.  They are and have been a huge inspiration to me as to how one can live and raise a family any where in the world.

Chatting with Kerwyn and Elena is easy.  They love to laugh and hearing their story in detail was a true pleasure.  In this interview, we discuss the differences in US and Spanish culture, raising a bi-lingual family, starting a business as husband & wife and with young children, and how American work ethic can both help and hurt entrepreneurs abroad.  This episode flew by for me, I can only hope we do a part 2 down the line, wherever that may be.  I hope you enjoy this MindMill episode with Kerwyn Hawkins and Elena Moreno-Barbero.

Our work philosophy is based on four fundamental pillars, which we use as a guide in our organization and growth:

Our CORE VALUES:
COMMUNITY – Our community is the environment for which we design our work and which allows us to observe results and inspire new programs.
CREATIVITY – In the acquisition of language, creativity helps us solve problems and connect ideas in the language we learn. Learning another language helps us see the world in more ways than one and encourages creative thinking, especially at an early age.
POSITIVITY – Positive thinking is transmitted in learning very easily and is an essential quality in our teachers and in our work environment.
PLAY – The learning through the game (play) is key in all the ages, and requires an alert and active mental implication.
